TOP 10 LOCOMOTIVES OF INDIAN RAILWAYS

Locomotives, which were considered the heart of INDIAN RAILWAYS, daily hauls millions freight and passengers trains from one place to another due to their powerful traction motors, cheesy design, axled bogies etc. Also several researches and projects were going on for development of our locomotives to make them fast, powerful, efficient, durable etc. so that they keep on providing their service for a long time.

So here we categorized and listed the top 10 powerful locomotives of Indian Railways which were categorized according to their rank in overall performance:

10. WDP 4

The WDP 4 (WIDE DIESEL PASSENGERS CLASS-4) locomotive is DIESEL TRACTIONED, 4000HP locomotive which are commonly used for hauling the passengers trains on the route. This locomotive comes with the single cabin which can easily haul 30-35 passenger coaches at a speed of 120-130km/hr. These locomotives are commonly used in mail, super-fast trains along with some premium trains. Its another variant is WDG 4 which is used for hauling the freight locomotives having same specifications. DURING THE TRIAL RUN OF TALGO COACHES, THESE LOCOMOTIVES WERE USED WHICH HAULED THEM AT A SPEED OF 180km/hr.

9. WAG 5

THE WAG 5 (WIDE AC-TRACTION GOODS CLASS-5) locomotive is an ELECTRIC TRACTIONED, 4350HP locomotives which are used for hauling the freight trains on the route. This locomotive have dual cabin which receives its power from 50 Hz O.H.E. cable through pantograph. This locomotives can haul the 50-60 good coaches at the speed of 40-45km/hr. They are now become the oldest electric good locomotive being used in INDIAN RAILWAYS.

8. WDP 4D

The WDP 4D (WIDE DIESEL PASSENGERS CLASS-4D) is a DIESEL TRACTIONED, 4500HP lcocomotive again used for hauling the passengers locomotive. Their models are just same as that of WDP 4 except of having the dual cabin and high horsepower. They are the most commonly used diesel locomotives on Indian Railways routes. But instead of having high horsepower than WDP 4, it can haul 30-35 passengers coaches at the speed of 100km/hr only. This is because of change in their gear ratio.

7. WDG 4D

The WDG 4G (WIDE DIESEL GOODS CLASS-4D) is again a DISEL TRACTIONED, 4500HP locomotive having same specification as that of WDP 4D (brothers) except it is used of good trains where WDP 4D is used for passengers trains. This is due to change in their gear ratio in which first is having an approx. of 3.6:1 whereas second is having an approx.. of 5:1. They can haul 50-60 goods coaches at speed of 45-50km/hr.

6. WAG 7

The WAG 7 (WIDE AC-TRACTINED GOODS CLASS-7) is an ELECTRIC TRACTIONED, 4850HP locomotive which is used to haul freight trains. They are commonly being used in freight trains which requires the average speed as they have much better starting torque. These locomotive can easily haul 50-60 goods coaches at an average speed of 50km/hr. They are the potential locomotives.

5. WAP 4

The WAP 4 (WIDE AC-TRACTINED PASSENGERS CLASS-4) is an ELECTRIC-TRACTIONED, PASSENGERS locomotive which is one of the most commonly used in the electric routes having the power output of 5000HP. They have BETTER ACCELERATIONS, HIGH SPEED which makes it most widely used. They are used in almost every type of coaches include the most of the premium trains such as RAJDHANI, SHATABDI, DORUNTO EXPRESS etc. They can easily haul 30-35 coaches at the speed of 120-130km/hr easily.

4. WDG 5

The WDG 5 (WIDE DIESEL GOODS CLASS-5) is a DIESEL TRACTIONED, 5500HP locomotive which is use for hauling the freight trains and is known by its special name ‘BHEEM’. This locomotive is the powerful among all the diesel locomotive manufactured by DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE WORKS (D.L.W.) which can easily haul 55-60 goods coaches at a speed of 70km/hr. but their quantity is very less as all the rail routes are getting electrified.

3. WAP 5

The WAP 5 (WIDE AC-TRACTION PASSENGER CLASS-5) is an ELECTRIC TRACTIONED, 6000HP locomotive which is used for hauling the passenger trains. This locomotive is counted as one of the powerful locomotive and mostly used for hauling the premium superfast trains. The fastest trains include GATIMAN EXPRESS, BHOPAL SHATABDI, MUMBAI RAJDHANI are hauled by this locomotive. But this locomotive can only 20-25 passenger coaches at a top speed of 140-150km/hr. This is because of change in its gear ratio.
